All teachers live with the demands made by assessment systems. Unfortunately, owing to work-a-day pressures and concerns, they have little opportunity for considering and furthering their understanding of the different issues which can be illuminated by a critical examination of the various technical ideas of assessment. This work addresses this need - by indicating points of growth or change within the field of assessment it will inform teachers more comprehensively.
