Overview

There are hundreds of restaurants in our state that have been around for more than twenty years. Some boast lots of atmosphere and a few gimmicks, like the Big Texan Steak Ranch in Amarillo. Others are more refined and elegant, like the Green Pastures Restaurant in Austin. Many double as a community watering hole, where locals gather to drink coffee and discuss what’s happening around town. The Blue Bonnet in Marble Falls fits that bill. Large or small, fancy or plain, these restaurants share three things in common: long histories, established reputations, and loyal customers. Author Sheryl Smith-Rodgers scoured the state to find the best of these old-time restaurants and cafes, and then collected some of their tried-and-true Texas recipes, making this an excellent gift book, recipe source, and weekend travel guide.

Synopsis

Visit any new town, and your first question almost always is where can we go for a good meal? Texas Roadside Cafes pays tribute to at least 50 well-established, tried-and-true restaurants and cafes around the state and a few off-the-wall ones, too, such as the Big Texan Steak Ranch (established in 1960) in Amarillo and Po-Po Family Restaurant (in business since 1938) near Welfare. Texas Roadside Cafes serves up some interesting recipes, too, like "Big Texan Texas Caviar" and "Po-Po Family Restaurants Butterflied Fried Shrimp."

Nothing fancy served here, just plain good ol' down-home cooking. Author Sheryl Smith-Rogers has scoured the state looking for the best of the old-time cafes and restaurants and then coaxed some of their tried-and-true Texas cookin' recipes for us to try. A great book for the weekend traveler.
