North Carolina is a state that includes sprawling mountain ranges, seemingly endless forests, and a rugged Atlantic coastline. In colonial days, North Carolina was a mainstay of English commerce, as crops such as tobacco and flax combined with the timber trade to produce a great deal of wealth. In Tamara Britton's The North Carolina Colony readers will be introduced to some of the early history of what was to become the twelfth state in the Union. The author of this volume of "The Colonies" series combines a concise text with numerous colorful illustrations. This is a book for beginners and is geared toward either elementary age readers or teachers searching for a high interest, low vocabulary approach to American history. As such, this book serves well as an introductory text aimed at a novice reader. As in other books in this series, the format is a template that outlines a sequence of presentation of material. The subjects covered include early history, first explorers, life in the colony, and colonial homes and more. In each chapter the author briefly addresses the topic with the accompanying illustration serving as a visual reminder of the material covered. Taken as a whole, this series fills a useful niche in history education. Taken alone, The North Carolina Colony represents a journeyman-like work that will be of interest to youngsters with a bent for colonial study. 2001, ABDO Publishing Company, RomaneckBook Details
