There are times in history when America has taken a stand for a just cause abroad. Cuba has been the object of one of those actions. The Spanish-American War might have begun under false pretenses, but its outcome led to the freeing of Cuba from Spanish rule. When the warship Maine sank while in the harbor of Havana, journalists quickly blamed Spain. Although Spain was in conflict with Cuban rebels, it by no means wanted a war with a country the size of the United States. But that is what Spain got. "Remember the Maine!" was a chant heard around the nation. From the initial attack in the Philippines to take out the Spanish fleet to the final battles against mosquitoes and yellow fever in Cuba, the United States remained strong in its support of Cubans and freedom around the globe. This detailed text portrays an amazing amount of research in its writing, as though the author was at some point present in many of the actions that occurred. Every minute detail in this short 114-day war is packed into 108 pages. What a wonderful find for the history buff. 2001, Millbrook Press, $28.90. Ages 10 up. Reviewer:Scott S.
