Children's Literature

There are times in history when America has taken a stand for a just cause abroad. Cuba has been the object of one of those actions. The Spanish-American War might have begun under false pretenses, but its outcome led to the freeing of Cuba from Spanish rule. When the warship Maine sank while in the harbor of Havana, journalists quickly blamed Spain. Although Spain was in conflict with Cuban rebels, it by no means wanted a war with a country the size of the United States. But that is what Spain got. "Remember the Maine!" was a chant heard around the nation. From the initial attack in the Philippines to take out the Spanish fleet to the final battles against mosquitoes and yellow fever in Cuba, the United States remained strong in its support of Cubans and freedom around the globe. This detailed text portrays an amazing amount of research in its writing, as though the author was at some point present in many of the actions that occurred. Every minute detail in this short 114-day war is packed into 108 pages. What a wonderful find for the history buff. 2001, Millbrook Press, $28.90. Ages 10 up. Reviewer:Scott S. Floyd

Gr 6-9-On the night of February 15, 1898, the battleship Maine blew up in the Havana harbor, triggering the Spanish-American War. Through this war, which was "the shortest and least damaging of American conflicts," the United States became a world power. Dolan provides an in-depth study of this historic event, including the home front. Vivid descriptions of the battles at sea and on land give readers a clear understanding of various strategies that led to victories and defeats. Reactions to the outcome of the war, such as changes in nations and territories, are addressed. Sidebars offer additional fascinating facts and black-and-white maps, photographs, and reproductions provide points of reference. This short book offers a solid discussion of the event including its ramifications, both in domestic and foreign policy.-Lana Miles, Duchesne Academy, Houston, TX Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
