Overview

Why is everyone so crazy for Vampires, Daphne wonders. Well, Vampires can’t die or get wrinkly that’s what makes them so magical. And it’s kinda cool to be bitten by a vampire because you’ll live forever. So, when the teachers announce a costume day next Friday, (even though Halloween is long past), Daphne wants to be the best vampire ever! But what is cool and what is nerdy in Vampire Land? Daphne’s about to find out!

The Vampire Dare!

Moss, Marissa (Author) , Moss, Marissa (Illustrator)

Jun 2011. 80 p. Simon & Schuster, paperback, $5.99. (9781442417373).

Like Moss’ books about Amelia, this series featuring a fourth-grader named Daphne takes the form of

journals filled with doodles and private musings. Daphne is one of those dramatic girls for whom life is

filled with lots of “TOTAL DISASTERS.” In this story, she decides to be a vampire for her school’s

Costume Day and then has to figure out how to distinguish her vampire costume from everyone else’s. The

plot plays out quickly and predictably, but the doodles are amusing, such as the various animals pictured as vampires and the cavalcade of disastrous costumes. As a character, Daphne isn’t developed much in this book, but that is somewhat ameliorated by the simultaneously published The Name Game!, in which she’s mistakenly called “Daffy” by Ms. Underwood on the first day of school (compelling Daphne to get even

by calling her teacher “Ms Underwear”). Light, quick, and sure to be popular.

This young diarist is highly opinionated and readers will enjoy her impressions of everything from bad teachers to eccentric flavors of ice cream.

Children's Literature - Susan Thomas

The trials and tribulations of a fourth grade girl are the subject of a new series of journals by Moss. In the same style as the Amelia notebooks, "Daphne's Diary of Daily Disasters" series is hand lettered and illustrated by line drawings. Daphne decides to dress up as a vampire on costume day at school, but since vampires have become so popular, she enlists her friend Kaylee to help make her costume special. Of course, this turns out to be a disaster, but her twin brothers, who are in kindergarten, help her out. Daphne is desperate to be cool, so more daily disasters, in the form of future diaries, are sure to follow. As Amelia began as a fifth grader and has been working her way through middle school in her notebooks, Amelia's cousin Daphne, will certainly appeal to a younger audience. And with the current popularity of this diary style, even though not great literature, these books will be read. Reviewer: Susan Thomas
