Children's Literature

In April of 1865 the shattered Army of Northern Virginia under the command of the redoubtable General Robert E. Lee marched to the vicinity of Appomattox. There, a massive Union force confronted these proud Confederate veterans. Eventually, the Rebels were forced to surrender, thus marking the informal end of the Civil War. The Federal commander at Appomattox was Ulysses Simpson Grant. In the years prior to these momentous events, few people could have guessed that Grant would be even remotely successful in his life. Here, in a solid illustrated biography, readers will learn about the ups and downs of Grant's life. A talented and dogged commander, Grant was also a dedicated husband, doting father and a lover of animals. Grant's story is one marked by great successes and awesome failures. Yet, throughout his life, Grant modeled a pattern of dedication and simplicity that make him an admirable man. This able biography captures these qualities as well as telling a tale of vital importance about the Civil War. Readers with any sort of interest in the Civil War will find this book to be a valuable addition to their libraries. Part of "Triangle Histories the Civil War" series. 2001, Blackbirch Press, $19.95. Ages 10 to 14. Reviewer: Greg M. Romaneck

Gr 6-9-These biographies of individuals whose names are synonymous with the Civil War focus on the war years. The men's early lives, education, occupation, and family life are outlined in two chapters or less. All three of them overcame great personal and professional obstacles, sometimes mistakes, to reach their lifetime goals and to fulfill their duty to their country. The texts incorporate quotes, sidebars, and highlighted topical pages. In addition to coverage of the war years, Lee and Grant also briefly discuss their postwar lives. Common themes and repeated information tie these series titles together and reinforce basic facts about the era. Excellent color and black-and-white illustrations, maps, and photographs are found throughout each volume. Although there are no textual citations, each book includes lists of suggested readings and Web sites for additional information.-Patricia Ann Owens, Wabash Valley College, Mt.
