Children's Literature

Each page of this book contains important Spanish vocabulary related to a different theme. Words dealing with numbers, colors, sizes, shapes, emotions, prepositions, weather, body parts and action verbs are all accompanied by illustrations that help to clarify any word unfamiliar to readers. Various animal species help illuminate the section about numbers while painters painting a room give definition to each of the colors. Different dog breads illustrate different sizes, and a circus scene provides the background for the section about shapes. Human faces depict the emotions, and a barnyard scene clarifies the prepositions. Each of the four seasons is represented on the page about weather, and a day at the beach helps express body parts and the action verbs. In addition to the vocabulary words, which make up most of the text, short sentences are interspersed among the illustrations asking for young readers' commentary. Some of these questions ask readers about their favorite color or game or how many fingers and toes they can count on a person. Because of the small print of these questions and the personal nature of each answer, this book would best be used in a one-on-one situation with a child and an older reader. Spanish text. 2000 (orig. 1997), Two-Can Publishing, $4.95. Ages 2 to 6. Reviewer: Ramirose Ilene Attebury AGES: 2 3 4 5 6
