Overview

Miles overhead, a thin layer of ozone gas blankets the earth, shielding life on the surface from the sun's deadly ultraviolet radiation. But this protective cover is shrinking, destroyed by chemicals released into the atmosphere. As a result, more UV rays now reach the ground, and skin cancer is on the rise.

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot

Can we afford not to be concerned? The protective ozone layer is shrinking and skin cancer is on the rise. Noted nonfiction writer Pringle, moves from an explanation of what ozone is to the discovery by scientist that the ozone layer is indeed in danger. He further delves into the political and economic barriers that prevented serous actions early on, and tells readers what they can do to help protect themselves and the environment. This is a well-written and timely book on a subject that affects everyone.

School Library Journal

Gr 4-8Pringle involves readers in the exciting story of how dedicated scientists throughout the world struggled to gain understanding and evidence of the thinning ozone layer; the tug-of-war between industry, environmentalists, and governments; and the drama of media coverage of the crisis. Beginning with an explanation of the ozone molecule and continuing with a Jekyll-Hyde analogy of the positive/negative nature of it, the author clearly sets the stage for students in pursuit of answers. The organization is excellent, with the clear message that in order to address the scientific, as well as the philosophical, questions, one must first understand the facts. Technical terms are well balanced with everyday examples of how the changing ozone can affect humans, animals, plants, and the supply of natural resources. Crisp black-and-white photographs, diagrams, and maps illustrate the text. Concluding chapters offer suggestions for taking action and include addresses for government agencies and environmental groups. Youngsters will enjoy the behind-the-scenes details, as well as learning about scientists who pursue the investigation with all the dedication of crime-stopping detectives. An enlightening discussion of the issue.Sarabeth Kalajian, Venice Public Library, FL
