Overview

Viking Explorers tells of Viking raiders who reached the Mediterranean, of expeditions to colonize Iceland, Greenland, and the Far North, of Leif Eriksson and his 'discovery' of America, and of other journeys deep into the heart of Russia. Read about why the explorers set out, how they traveled, hazards they encountered on the way, and what the Vikings brought back with them. Clear maps and superb reconstructions bring these journeys vividly to life.

An illustrated survey of the early history of the Vikings, focusing on sea exploration, ships, navigation methods, and trade routes.

Gr 3-6-Two supplementary purchases. Morley covers four centuries of European exploration from Columbus, Cabot, and the Conquistadores; to Cartier, Champlain, and the Coureurs de Bois; to Lewis and Clark, Mackenzie, and Fremont. Similarly, Pruneti addresses the Vikings' raids, ships, and homes as well as their forays into England, Europe, Iceland, Greenland, the New World, and the Byzantine Empire. In both books, most entries are covered in a double-page spread that includes brief text, a small map, and a number of mediocre full-color illustrations. Both titles include a time chart and glossary, but neither one offers more than an introductory overview.-Susan Pine, New York Public Library
