Children's Literature - Kris Sauer

Do you have a young reader who wants to know more about the weapons used in modern times? This book may suffice, as it covers everything from robots to bombs to guns to tanks. Using full-page, full-color photographs coupled with simple text geared towards younger readers, this text covers the gamut of modern weaponry. Broken down into chapters on robots, firepower, explosives, and vehicles, the book uses colorful graphics and sidebars with definitions and fast facts to help scaffold new and difficult words and concepts. Each chapter ends with a full-page layout of examples of the weapons discussed, reinforcing and detailing the intended focus. Part of a four-title "Weapons of War" series, the text is written at a grade one to two reading level but has an interest level up to grade nine. A glossary, bibliography, index, and guide to topical internet sites is included as well. This would be a good addition to a non-fiction library short on military texts and would be particularly useful for students in the upper grades with an interest in this topic who might be reading below grade level.
