Children's Literature

The popularity of BMX Freestyle biking, as with other extreme sports, has grown in leaps and bounds for the last ten years. This volume of the "To the Extreme" series opens this extreme world for the early reader. Kudos must be given to the constant reminder to the reader that safety equipment is so important. As with the other titles in this series, the format of the book is a short paragraph on the page with an accompanying photograph. The book is broken down into the various types of freestyle biking. The author works well with basic vocabulary to provide the young reader with an introduction to the sport. Often within middle and high school libraries, the struggling reader is forgotten as far as reading material selection. Students faced with this problem will struggle having to choose books that are, subject wise, intended for younger children. This series—while indicated for early readers—provides subjects that can allow older children with reading issues to become engaged. Included in the book are a glossary, an index and a further reading section. 2005, Capstone Press, Ages 6 to 10.
