What Are Oceans? Is a book for beginning readers. Oceans are large bodies of salty water with waves. Oceans meet the land at the shore. The land at the shore drops down to meet the ocean and goes under the ocean. There are four zones or levels of the ocean, based on how much sunlight penetrates the depths of water. The top is called the sunlit zone. Next are the twilight zone and the dark zone. The abyss is the deepest zone of the ocean. The bottom has deep valleys called trenches. Most of the Earth's surface is covered in oceans, The Pacific Ocean being the largest. Beautiful photographs and simple graphs illustrate the short sentences of the book. A map identifies the Pacific Ocean. This book is part of the "Earth Features" series published to support the national science standards for information about landforms on Earth.
