Overview

Tierney's highly acclaimed Women's Studies Encyclopedia has become the standard in the field, but research on women has proceeded rapidly since its publication. Feminist thought has grown and branched out, and women's conditions have changed markedly in some areas. This revised and expanded edition will meet the continuing need for a multidisciplinary reference tool on all facets of the female condition. With close to 400 contributors, it expands coverage of such areas as violence against women, women in public life, and women in specific countries and regions. Many of the articles are new or completely rewritten, while others have been updated or expanded.

Editorials

Library Journal

Written from a wide-ranging feminist perspective, the first edition of this work (LJ 6/15/89) was a landmark achievement providing concise definitions and historical context for students and scholars alike. This new edition, published a year after Tierney's death, does include some new and revised material. For example, the article on "Rape" was completely rewritten, adding new data and a longer bibliography. There is a completely new article entitled "Science and Women," and information for various countries has been added or updated. Most of the entries, however, are unchanged except to update bibliographies. In many cases this is of no concern, though in others it is, e.g., in the entry for "Absentee Rates" the data used are over ten years old. The most striking change, and greatest improvement, is the arrangement in alphabetical order rather than in three topical volumes. Even though the textual changes are not substantial, most libraries will find that the updated material and improved arrangement justify purchase.--Linda V.
