Description:This immunology review is part of the Crash Course series, which is meant to be used for review of course material, particularly in preparing for USMLE. Although this is defined as the first edition, it seems to be replacing a book entitled Crash Course Immunology and Haematology, 2nd edition, Griffin et al. (Elsevier, 2003).
Purpose:The book is meant to serve the same function as a well prepared collection of class notes. Its goal is to serve as a way to get to the core of immunology and to be used as a review aid. The information available to students is always increasing and this book focuses on the important matters that are worthy of their attention.
Audience:Its appeal is primarily to medical students studying for Part 1 of the USMLE. It could also be useful to undergraduates as well as residents and fellows who need a quick review of immunology. The author is a pathologist who appears knowledgeable about the subject.
Features:The book covers all the material that would be found in a basic immunology course. The information is up to date. Each chapter includes boxes with important basic definitions as well as a series of questions that define what the student should have learned from the chapter. The figures are two-color and some of them are a bit complicated, but most are easy to follow for someone who has already had an immunology course. The references are useful but not as current as one might like. There are also MCQ for self-assessment. Purchase of the book allows online access to studentconsult.com, which offers access to the complete text and illustrations of the book, links to other Student Consult titles, downloading to handheld devices, as well as other resources.
Assessment:An increasing number of review books are being published for students preparing for USMLE. However, if a student is in the market for a review book, this is a good choice. The information is presented in an accessible way. The test questions are a good start for studying. There are apparently additional USMLE-type questions on the Student Consult site.
