Children's Literature

Horned lizards are frightening creatures. Their heads are surrounded by horns, spines line their sides, and they can squirt blood from their eyes. Despite the fearsome visage, their only prey are ants. This strange animal is the subject of this new nonfiction book, a part of the "World of Reptiles" series. Aspects of the lizard's life are explained in simple passages. Features like the table of contents and an index are helpful, but it is the large color photographs that are the real draw to young readers, especially the picture of the lizard squirting blood. Science teachers will love this book, but they need to be aware that not all of the hard words are defined. Students in middle school who are still reading at a low level will also love this book. It is an exciting addition to any library.
