Doody Review Services

Reviewer:Rachel M. Sheridan, MD(Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center)
Description:This concise book covers the main basic principles of cellular pathology and key clinicopathological conditions in each of the major organ systems.
Purpose:The intent of the authors was to provide a quick reference for undergraduate and postgraduate students by covering basic principles of general and organ systems pathology. The authors have achieved their stated goals.
Audience:Undergraduate and postgraduate students are the intended audience.
Features:The book is divided into 12 chapters that cover general pathology and organ system pathology. The first chapter deals with general pathology, and the remaining chapters are dedicated to organ systems. Immunology, hematology, chemical pathology, and microbiology are not included. Each pathologic condition is described under standardized headings including definition, etiology, and macroscopic and microscopic features. Some up-to-date, clinically relevant aspects, such as key diagnostic stains, relevant genetic data, staging systems, and classifications are also included. Clinical management of these diseases is not touched upon. A list of abbreviations is given at the beginning of the book.
Assessment:Written in a student-friendly way, this book will be most useful to senior medical students who wish to review pathology during their clinical rotations or in preparation for major comprehensive examinations. I am not sure that it contains enough detail for examinations during a typical pathology course, and I do not think that it can be used for learning pathology de novo. The market abounds with similar review books and thus this one will have to compete on its own merits, which are not intuitively obvious.
