Overview

Medical Mycology: Cellular and Molecular techniques is a clear and concise overview of the subject that details the techniques essential for ongoing research in the area. Drawing together contributions from both scientists and clinicians working in the field, the text will provide a valuable perspective on the applicability of specific techniques to patient care.

A wide range of molecular, immunological and cytological techniques are discussed throughout, with the inclusion of protocol section in each chapter designed to provide both a background a up-to-date account of the applications of each procedure. Every technique is fully referenced and illustrations are provided where required to enhance student understanding.

  • comprehensive introduction to the key techniques critical to the study of medical mycology
  • clear explanation of how each technique is applied in the lab
  • contributions from internationally recognised experts in the field
  • outlines the background to many techniques required for the successful completion of a research project

An invaluable reference for students of microbiology, biochemistry and molecular biology as well as postgraduates and researchers in the field of medical mycology looking for an up-to-date overview of the latest laboratory techniques.

Doody Review Services

Reviewer:Rebecca T. Horvat, PhD, D(ABMM)(University of Kansas Medical Center)
Description:This comprehensive techniques book specifically addresses the techniques used to study fungi. Each chapter gives detailed protocols and advice for experimental work with fungal agents.
Purpose:The goal was to assemble detailed procedures on a variety of experimental techniques currently available for the study of fungal virulence. Use of these techniques will eventually produce an enhanced understanding of fungal pathogenesis and assist in the development of new antifungal agents. These chapters are written by expert scientists working with fungal pathogens and they bring a wealth of experience with each technique presented.
Audience:This book is written for scientists and students working in the area of fungal pathogenicity. The authors are all recognized experts in the area of fungal research.
Features:The 14 chapters provide detailed information on a variety of techniques used to study fungal biology. These techniques range from the visualization of fungal elements in tissue to the evaluation of antifungal activity and to the use of animal models. Several chapters give thorough protocols for the proteomic analysis of fungal cells and share advice regarding various methods used to study protein expression. Several chapters describe techniques used to study the genetic organization and gene expression of fungal cells. These even describe the production of knock-out organisms to study the function of the specific gene.
Assessment:This very useful book expansively covers laboratory techniques used to study fungal agents. There is no other current book that gives the details on experimental procedures that this one does. This is also a very affordable book -- for less than $100 a laboratory can acquire a wealth of information and advice on a wide range of procedures. This would be a very worthwhile acquisition for investigators working with fungi.
