The early settlers of America had very little money and needed horses that could do a variety of tasks, such as pull plows, carry heavy loads, and carry people from place to place. They also wanted horses that were beautiful. So the settlers created their own breeds, different from the breeds they had known in Europe. The Morgan horse was the first original American breed. This breed got its name from the man, Justin Morgan, who first began to develop this line. Today, all Morgan horses have a conformation like the first little horse owned by Justin Morgan.
