Overview
Animal friends are important figures in a child's life. My Pet explore the fun and responsibilities of these precious relationships.
Pets are loving and playful and just fun to be with. But having a pet also means taking good care of it: food and water, lots of exercise, and a clean place to sleep. And don't forget a trip to the vet to keep your pet healthy!
Each book in the Talk-About-Books series is illustrated with realistic and comforting photographs. Children from various familial, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds experience friends and pets in their many wonderful incarnations. The simple text and engaging photos invite and encourage discussion between adult and child as they have fun exploring the images together.

As the series title indicates, the supplied text is only the conversation starter. What the parent/adult and child do with the contents of the photographs after the first "reading" is up to them, but the photos' contents do provide ample opportunity for "taking-about." Part of the "talk-about-books" series, "Each story explains a different aspect of the young child's world using photographs..." The kids in this board book are the proud owners of a variety of pets. As expected there are dogs and cats, but others include hamsters, gerbils, fish and guinea pigs. None of the pictures are labeled so parents and caregivers may need to familiarize themselves with popular pets in order to answer questions such as "what is it?" The text is more focused on what one does with a pet, caring for them which includes a visit to the veterinarian and the sheer joy of having a pet for a friend. 2003, Anick Press, Ages 2 to 5.β Marilyn Courtot
