School Library Journal
Gr 4-6-Each volume begins with a brief explanation of why our diets must include certain nutrients to stay healthy. The texts go on to explain where we can find these nutrients, how the body processes the foods, and what happens when we eat too much or too little of these substances. King explains how carbohydrates fuel the body and how diabetics are not able to use the glucose that carbohydrates produce normally. In the second book, Royston looks at different kinds of proteins-antibodies, hormones, enzymes-and how vegetarians and vegans can get enough of them. The last title describes how the body uses different vitamins in preventing heart disease, fighting free radicals, and forming healthy nerve cells. All three volumes are written in a clear, organized style and the full-color illustrations and photos complement the texts. Simple but complete introductions to complex topics.-Christine A.
