Children's Literature - Joan Elste

This "Pebble Plus" series dealing with sea snakes is tight and well constructed for the suggested age group. The photographs of the variety of sea snakes in them are interesting enough; however, the photo showing a diver holding one of these snakes seemed out of place compared to the photographs of snakes alone. There is no mention of the different types of prey these snakes eat to survive other than a photograph of one eating a fish. Though there is mention that sea snakes primarily live in the ocean, the text also notes that some leave the ocean and crawl on land. Having nostrils that close under water and open to breath above the water may cause young minds to question whether sea snakes hold their breath and need to come above water for air. All in all, young readers will find this book interesting enough to perhaps search for more information at the Internet sites listed on the back page.
