Children's Literature

More homes have pets than kids--I read that in the newspaper today and it was a surprise. Furthermore, many homes have more than one pet. Among the animals of choice are dogs--often called man’s best friend, and one that kids seem to be drawn to. Airedales, according to Rake, are highly active dogs who like to run and swim. They are the type of dog that will run and fetch a stick, and they have a good sense of smell and are curious. It might be a good idea to keep shoes and other items away from these dogs since they also like to chew. They look like they are medium sized dogs, and since they have thick curly fur, they do require frequent brushing. Kids reading the book will see full page color photographs of a variety of Airedales as well as information and pictures demonstrating that they are clever, but require training. The closing pages contain a brief glossary, two recent books about dogs, one of which relates specifically to Airedales, and a notice that FactHound can help kids find more information on the Internet, an index, word count, and the targeted grade level as well as the early intervention level which happens to be 14. The books in the β€œDogs” series, which is part of the larger β€œPebble” series, support national science standards relating to life science. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
