Children's Literature

More homes have pets than kids--I read that in the newspaper today and it was a surprise. Furthermore, many homes have more than one pet. Among the animals of choice are dogs--often called man’s best friend, and one that kids seem to be drawn to. Boxers, according to Rake, enjoy being around kids. They are loving and protective and as puppies are comfortable around their owners. Rake refers to them as medium sized dogs, I personally have always though of them as fairly large dogs. Kids reading the book will see full page color photographs of a variety of Boxers as well as information and pictures demonstrating how to care for a Boxer. These dogs need food and water daily, exercise, weekly grooming, and should see a vet regularly. The closing pages contain a brief glossary, two recent books about dogs in general, and a notice that FactHound can help kids find more information on the Internet, an index, word count, and the targeted grade level as well as the early intervention level, which happens to be 14. The books in the β€œDogs” series, which is part of the larger β€œPebble” series, support national science standards relating to life science. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
