Editorials

From The Critics

Reviewer: Eric D. Grassman, M.D., Ph.D.(Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine)
Description: This is an update of edited book that covers the entire field of interventional cardiology. It includes pharmacology, procedures, ethical issues, teaching issues, financial concerns, and a look at the future. The previous edition was published in 1999.
Purpose: The purpose is to inform the reader of all new developments and trends in the field of interventional cardiology. In this era of evidence-based medicine, it is a very worthy objective. The book thoroughly meets the author's objectives.
Audience: In my judgment, the book is written for interventional cardiologists and interventional cardiology fellows. The editor is a world renowned interventional cardiologist and a very credible authority
Features: The book covers the entire field of interventional cardiology, from pharmacology, to procedure details, to ethical and financial issues. An outstanding feature of the book is the thorough inclusion of evidence-based interventional trials in all the chapters. In the first few pages of the book is a gallery of color plates which enhances the text.
Assessment: The quality and usefulness of the book are excellent. In comparison to a similar book, The Practice of Interventional Cardiology, 2nd edition, by Vogel and King (Mosby, 1993), it is more inclusive of the new interventional cardiology procedures, pharmacology, financial issues, and a view of the future. Its glossy style makes it pleasing to read.

Eric D. Grassman

This is the third edition of a classic book by one of the world's leaders in interventional cardiology. The purpose is to present evidence-based data on the indications, technology, and expectations of modern interventional cardiology. It is intended for interventional cardiologists and interventional cardiology fellows. It covers basic science, techniques, clinical indications, medical-legal aspects, and financial issues. Overall, this is an excellent review. In such a rapidly changing field, a fourth edition will be needed in the near future.
