Overview

The How we Know About series explores past civilizations with an emphasis on the archaeological record. In The Egyptians, each double-page spread looks at an important part of the ancient Egyptian way of life and illustrates key evidence – artifacts, architecture, arts and written sources – that enables us to reconstruct and understand their buildings, technology, clothes, jewelry and everyday life:

•Uncover both the palaces of kings and the simple homes of workers

•Follow a procession of priests through a temple and learn about Egyptian religion

•See the construction of the Great Pyramids

•Watch the pharaoh lead his soldiers into battle

An illustrated survey of life in Egypt during the era of the Pharaohs, discussing family life, farming, trade, hunting and fishing, religion, and warfare.

Editorials

School Library Journal

Gr 4-6-Attractive additions to a growing selection of books about ancient cultures. Topics are covered in double-page chapters with numerous full-color illustrations and photographs of artifacts. The Egyptians discusses everyday life, religion, tomb and monument construction, temple life, warfare, etc. Similar subjects are covered in The Greeks along with the Olympic Games, the Battle of Marathon, philosophy, and drama. A unique aspect of this series is the presentation of information about archaeological studies. The chapters include scenes from excavations, explanations of the tools and methods used, and specific discoveries that led to more knowledge about that particular aspect of Egyptian or Greek life and history. Chock-full of interesting tidbits, these overviews are not meaty enough for reports but make interesting fare for browsers.-Cynthia M. Sturgis, Ledding Library, Milwaukee, OR
