Aside from mostly minor issues, Hamilton's text is a comprehensive introduction to this branch of the military. Chapters examine Marine Corps history (through 2005), notable commanders, the hierarchy, training, reserve forces, weapons, and a brief section about the future of the Marines. Integrated into the book are a timeline, fun facts, a listing of ranks, and a glossary. Pay grade is included with ranks, but not explained. The glossary also seems haphazard. Not all words seem necessary or have a pronunciation guide—elite does, aviation does not. Aggression is defined, but persistent is not. However, the biggest issue is with diversity. The majority of photographs are of Caucasians. It would be nice if the photos in the book could reflect the actual composition of the Marines. While women are not shown in fatigues, there is a photograph that includes two women in dress uniforms. Otherwise, this is a good resource for the student looking for basic information about the Marines. It is part of the "Defending the Nation" series.
