Hole's focus is on the individual who enlists in a service, enumerating the advantages and disadvantages of military life and discussing why it may not be for everyone. The author does a good job of describing the process: from signing enlistment papers to leaving for boot camp, completion of basic training to the first duty station. Educational and promotional opportunities are outlined in detail.
