Children's Literature - Laura Ruttig

This book provides over twenty-five examples of simple experiments that kids can perform using very basic tools and materials. Each experiment is designed to convey some of the fundamentals of understanding weather phenomenon, from wind to sunlight to clouds. Instructions are written in a strange mixture of first- and second person point-of-view, but charts and the occasional illustration help the reader to follow the text. Many of the experiments are also easy enough to perform within a classroom setting, and each one leads into suggested ideas for further experiments. The author suggests that these further ideas are what might turn into an interesting science fair project, as they require a bit more effort. Furthermore, the text is careful to make clear that science fair experiments are often judged on the thought and creativity put into them, so simply pulling one of the experiments from the book is not enough. Nevertheless, these simple experiments can provide a great starting point for a young scientist, as a way to get him/her thinking about understanding how science works in the real world. Part of the "Earth Science! Best Science Projects" series.
