From The Critics
Reviewer: Michael G White, MD(Ochsner Clinic Foundation)Description: This review of pediatrics, written by the staff at Cincinnati Children's Hospital, covers general areas of pediatric practice, followed by a section of questions with answers, and supplemented by a website that has a sample online test with answers.
Purpose: Part of a series designed to prepare students for USMLE steps 2 and 3, this is one of many books directed at fulfilling this objective. It meets the objective well and provides an online test in a format very similar to the USMLE.
Audience: The editors note that the audience has included third and fourth year medical students, residents in emergency medicine and family practice, as well as nurse practitioners and physician assistants.
Features: Chapters cover all general areas of pediatrics and include key points, summary questions and answers, all in a fairly standard format. The online test, which is accessed by a password, can be formatted in several different ways, providing an environment as close as possible to the format now used for most standardized tests.
Assessment: This is a very readable review of pediatric topics and the key points are useful. The sample questions and answers are relatively standard, but the online test is quite helpful for preparation for a standardized test.
