Synopsis
This short-fiction series of spine-chilling stories will thrill young readers with its tales of horror, mystery, and the supernatural. Selections include both short prose and excerpts of longer works by well-known authors such as Charles Dickens, Bram Stoker, Oscar Wilde, and Edgar Allan Poe, and introduces the work of a number of less widely known writers, including Gertrude Atherton, Frank Norris, Amelia B. The selections in these titles are easily found elsewhere. The first book includes Charles Dickens's "The Trial for Murder" and Mary E. Wilkins's "The Lost Ghost." The second one has an extract from Edgar Allan Poe's "The Fall of the House of Usher" and E. F. Benson's "The Room in the Tower." While the stories are not overly graphic or frightening, some contain difficult vocabulary. Each volume has full-color illustrations, and some pages have colored backgrounds, which make the books seem as if they were intended for a younger audience.
