Synopsis

A water-holding frog that can go without food for five years. Another frog that survives winters by allowing two-thirds of the water in its body to freeze solid. A cave-dwelling fish that defies the darkest depths by developing superior senses of smell and touch as its eyes shrink. Other deep-sea fish that generate their own light to find food. It takes all kinds of animals to populate the natural world. Here's how they manage to keep nature on their side!

Carol Lynch - Children's Literature

The "Animal Marvels" series includes a number of titles that introduce children to the wonders of the natural world. Lifelike illustrations accompany each section of text to illustrate the concepts being presented. In the volume titled Surviving, Fortin presents the numerous dangers that threaten the lives of animals. These include dangerous climates, harsh seasonal changes, pollution and other animals. Endangered and extinct animals are introduced. All of these volumes follow the same format of double-page spreads for each concept and short paragraphs of information. A large world map at the end of each book identifies the home environment of all the animals mentioned in the book. A glossary and chart of fun facts wrap up each book.
