Synopsis

Paint faces on stones for a family of four. Cut a sponge for a springy clown. Make beads and bells chime or a rainbow of chalk. Stones, shells, buttons, and bells are everyday craft "stuff" -- and there is so much "stuff" to use. So let's create with stones and "stuff"!

Kristin Harris - Children's Literature

The "Let's Create" series of craft books are reminiscent of another era. The projects and materials are unusual. The books were translated from Spanish, which may explain the unfamiliar supplies and old-fashioned projects. These twelve projects are made from stones and other assorted objects. A toilet paper roll is cut in half and put on a rectangular sponge to make a bow tie. Small stones with painted heads are glued onto bodies that have been drawn on paper. Jewelry is made of beads and strung on a cord. Cellophane raffia is added to the top of a balloon to create hair. A face is glued and painted on the balloon to complete the face. Small pebbles are added to a shoe box diorama to create a beach scene. A scallop shell is painted and glued on a drawing of a girl to be her skirt. Colored chalk is powered and added to sand to color it. The colored sand is then layered in a glass jar to make a rainbow. A large rock is painted and becomes a paperweight. Each project is on a spread that is illustrated with large photographs. Most of the supplies required for these activities should be readily available. 2003, Gareth Stevens Publishing, Ages 5 to 9.
