Synopsis of Biochemistry (National Medical Series)
NMS Biochemistry, Fourth Edition, is designed to help medical students successfully complete a course in biochemistry and prepare for USMLE Step 1. This new edition has been significantly updated, and extensively rewritten to emphasize medical relevance.
Eugene A. Davidson
This volume is intended as a convenience for medical students either enrolled in a biochemistry class or reviewing for Part I of the national licensing examination. It is organized in a format standard to most texts and the material covered is generally discussed in a medical biochemistry class. A CD-ROM is attached that contains material suitable for self-testing. The purpose is to provide a biochemistry guide for medical students. Students wishing to reinforce factual information in preparation for the currently used multiple-choice format examinations will find enough here. Specifics are emphasized, but the text is terse, and neither integration of concepts nor a rationale for learning the material is presented. There is little coordination of the material, especially in the discussions of metabolism. Those seeking deeper understanding or a clear interface between biochemistry and other pre-clinical disciplines or various aspects of medicine will need to look elsewhere. The difficulty of satisfying the requirements for the first year medical school course in biochemistry remains. The standard texts contain too much and the short form versions not enough -- a dilemma for even the best students.
